Satellite Internet: Ukraine Confirms Full Bandwidth Return

Ukrainian forces have regained unrestricted access to Starlink services, ending a week of operational disruptions at the front lines.

Ukrainian soldiers and drone operators can once again use satellite connections without speed caps, a development that Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara announced on Saturday. This resolution concludes a period of more than a week where limited data speeds interfered with military operations at the front.

Khmara stated that monitoring systems within the Defense Ministry now indicate stable connections for assets traveling at velocities exceeding 250 mph. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that technical checks verified both Starlink and Starshield, the military-grade iteration of the service, are functioning at required speeds. Zelenskyy noted that the restoration started the previous night, with sufficient speeds available by morning. He emphasized that this capability is critical for front-line logistics and for defending against reactive Shahed drones, which are Iranian-made and regularly launched by Russia.

The temporary restrictions on Starshield caused significant concern among Ukrainian military leadership and government officials. Commanders reported that missions were disrupted and some drones were lost during the week of reduced service. The issue has since been resolved, allowing for the resumption of standard operational procedures.

This technical fix arrives during a renewed diplomatic effort to end the conflict. U.S. envoys have initiated a new push for peace, and Russia agreed on Wednesday to resume three-way talks with Washington and Kyiv next month. Additionally, Kyiv and Moscow reached an agreement on Friday for a localized ceasefire around Oleshky, a Russian-occupied town in the southern Kherson region. First Lady Melania Trump brokered this specific truce.

The satellite outage has contributed to rising tensions between Kyiv and Washington. The relationship was already under strain following a reported deal between President Donald Trump and Moscow regarding Russian diesel imports, a move Ukraine perceived as a betrayal. Khmara attributed the successful resolution to direct dialogue and Zelenskyy’s diplomatic efforts with Washington. He highlighted that the restored service is vital for military work, drone operations, and communications.

Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to American officials and other partners for taking the matter seriously and providing assistance. He stated that the current speed levels are exactly what the military requires. While the technical issue appears settled, questions remain regarding the chain of command behind the initial interruption.

The satellite network, built by Elon Musk’s company, has been a cornerstone of Ukraine’s defense strategy for years. Trump has maintained that he did not personally order the service cut, though he also stated that Musk should not be held responsible. The episode underscores the complex interplay between military technology and diplomatic relations in the ongoing war.
