Teen Arrested Over Alleged Plan to Target Texas Congressman at Fundraiser

Federal authorities detained a 17-year-old from McKinney after he allegedly plotted to attack Rep. Keith Self during a veterans' charity event.

For voters in North Texas, the recent arrest of a local teenager marks a significant shift in the security posture of a high-profile congressional race. A 17-year-old from McKinney has been charged with plotting to assassinate Republican Representative Keith Self, who is currently seeking a third term in office for Texas’ third congressional district. Campaign officials confirmed the details to local media, noting that the incident has heightened vigilance as early voting proceeds across the state.

The federal investigation began with the teen's arrest on October 5. Rep. Self’s team first learned of the detention on October 6 through U.S. Capitol Police. Investigators informed the campaign that the suspect had been radicalized and was under federal monitoring. Authorities indicated that the teen was planning a terrorist attack on behalf of ISIS, with a specific target: Self was to be struck at a chili cook-off fundraiser for veterans scheduled for October 17. The event was set to feature former Cowboys players and other prominent guests.

Upon receiving the intelligence, the congressman’s staff increased their situational awareness. Self, who has deployed to combat zones multiple times, stated that his military background helped him remain calm rather than panicked. "Having deployed into combat zones several times, I'm happy it happened to me because people that have never dealt with this before tend to freak out when somebody tells you that somebody's trying to kill you," Self said. He noted that his primary concern was determining if the suspect was acting alone, a question his wife, a military spouse for 25 years, also took seriously.

Despite the threat, Self proceeded with his schedule, including judging 19 different chilies and three pots of beans at the fundraiser. "It was a delightful time and nothing, of course, happened," he recalled. The congressman emphasized that this incident was distinct from previous threats he had received, as this was the first time an arrest had been made in connection with a plot against him. He described the potential severity of the incident based on the information provided by investigators.

The political context of the case is significant, as Self has taken a strong stance against Sharia law. In September, he introduced a nonbinding resolution denouncing the practice and affirming the U.S. Constitution as the supreme law. This stance coincides with local debates in McKinney, where the City Council recently approved a site plan for mosque expansion after hours of contentious public comment. The teen’s identity has not been released publicly as the investigation continues.

The arrest has also drawn attention from the other side of the race. Evan Hunt, Self’s opponent in the upcoming midterm election, condemned the alleged plot on social media. Self stated that the incident will not deter him from campaigning or meeting with voters. "We continued our activities and just watched what was going on around us," he said, adding that he has continued polling and greeting voters every day. The FBI Dallas office has been contacted for further comment but has not yet responded.
