The football world turns its attention to one of the sport's oldest and most intense rivalries this weekend. Barcelona will host Real Madrid in Sunday's La Liga contest, a fixture that continues to draw millions of global viewers. Known in Spanish as El Clasico, the match has historically featured many of the game's most celebrated athletes.

The rivalry stretches back to 1902, and the stakes extend far beyond the pitch. The two clubs are currently tied with 106 victories each, meaning a win on Sunday could shift the historical balance. Past iterations have showcased legends such as Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar Jr, Luis Suarez, David Beckham, and Zinedine Zidane. Recent attention has focused on Barcelona's Lamine Yamal and Raphinha, alongside Real Madrid's Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, and Vinicius Jr.

One standout encounter occurred on April 23, 2017, when Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 3-2 at the Santiago Bernabeu. Casemiro gave the hosts an early lead, but Messi equalized quickly. Ivan Rakitic restored Barcelona's lead after halftime, only for Sergio Ramos to be sent off following a challenge on Messi. James Rodriguez leveled the score in the 85th minute, but Messi scored the final goal of the match to reach his 500th career goal for the club. Barcelona briefly took the lead in the league table, though Real Madrid ultimately secured the title by three points.

In a dramatic draw on March 10, 2007, at Camp Nou, a 19-year-old Messi scored his first career hat-trick. The young forward rescued a point for Barcelona, who were reduced to ten men. Ruud van Nistelrooy scored twice for Real Madrid, with Sergio Ramos adding a third, but Messi equalized in the first minute of stoppage time. Both teams finished the season with 76 points, with Real Madrid claiming the championship based on head-to-head record.

Real Madrid dominated a 4-2 home victory on April 10, 2005, featuring their squad of expensive stars signed under president Florentino Perez. Zidane opened the scoring, followed by goals from Ronaldo Nazario and Raul. Michael Owen sealed the win in the 65th minute. Samuel Eto'o and Ronaldinho scored for Barcelona, but the visitors still won the league that season by three points. Another memorable defeat for Barcelona came on May 2, 2009, when they lost 6-2 at the Bernabeu. Thierry Henry scored twice, while Messi, Carles Puyol, and Gerard Pique also found the net. Barcelona won the league that year by nine points.

The final notable match was the Copa del Rey final on April 20, 2011. After a goalless ninety minutes, Real Madrid won 1-0 in extra time. Cristiano Ronaldo headed home a pass from Angel Di Maria to secure the victory. Di Maria was later sent off for a second yellow card, but the result held. This win marked Real Madrid's first trophy under manager Jose Mourinho and their first domestic cup since 1993.
