Elena Rybakina is set to defend her title at the Ningbo Open after a hard-fought semifinal win. The match ended in her favor against Diana Shnaider. This result keeps her title hopes alive for a second consecutive year. It also serves as a strong statement ahead of the upcoming WTA Finals.

Rybakina defeated the sixth seed Shnaider with a score of 6-3 and 7-5. Her opponent in the final will be unseeded Leylah Fernandez. Fernandez reached the final by beating Marie Bouzkova. The first semifinal took place at the Yinzhou International Tennis Centre. Both matches followed the same scoreline of 6-3 and 7-5.

The world number one arrived in Ningbo after a rough stretch of tournaments. She suffered a heavy loss in Beijing recently. A foot injury forced her to withdraw from the Wuhan event. Against the 13th ranked Shnaider, she showed flashes of elite play. However, the match was not without moments of uncertainty.

Rybakina took control of the first set with an aggressive style. She hit powerful winners from deep in the court. A dip in form made the conclusion of the set difficult. She eventually sealed the set on her eleventh set point. The player described the game as long and important. She noted that she struggled to close the game despite playing well initially.

The second set mirrored the pattern of the first. The 27 year old three time Grand Slam winner continued to struggle with first serve accuracy. She won key points to move ahead 4-3 with a break. Shnaider then broke her serve to love in the tenth game. Rybakina responded with big hitting to retake the lead. She served with more confidence to close out the victory.

Shnaider's left handed game created specific challenges for Rybakina. The winner acknowledged that playing against left handers is difficult on tour. She mentioned that switching patterns during rallies was an issue. Fernandez is also left handed. This means Rybakina faces a similar tactical test in Sunday's final.

Rybakina aims to sharpen her game before the final. She will then move to the Pan Pacific Open in Tokyo. The WTA Finals title defense begins in Indian Wells on November 8. She remained measured when asked about winning back to back trophies. She said she would fight and give her all in the final.
