How $965 Billion in Private Value Is Reshaping Anthropic Backer Fortunes

Early investors and late-stage VCs stand to see massive returns as the AI leader prepares for a potential public listing this year.

The artificial intelligence sector is nearing a major financial milestone as Anthropic prepares for a public listing. This upcoming move is expected to occur later this year and could value the company at up to $2 trillion. Such a valuation would create significant wealth for both early and later-stage investors who have backed the firm.

Even before the IPO, the stakes held by many venture capital firms and individual backers already total billions of dollars. According to Bloomberg, the company’s latest private market valuation stands at $965 billion. This figure provides a clear snapshot of what these key stakeholders currently own and how their positions have appreciated over time.

The timeline of these investments reveals a dramatic rise in value for those who entered early. Eric Schmidt, the former Google CEO, invested in the 2021 Series A when the startup was valued at just $461 million. Today, he owns about 1% of the company. At the current private valuation, that modest early stake is worth nearly $10 billion.

Other investors have seen their capital grow at different paces depending on when they entered. Menlo Ventures led the Series D round and has invested more than $1 billion over time, a stake now valued at $14 billion. Spark Capital, the only VC firm known to hold a board seat, invested $75 million in the 2023 Series C when the valuation was $5 billion. That position has grown more than ninetyfold to reach $7 billion.

Late-stage bets have also proven lucrative for major investment firms. Iconiq wrote a $6 billion check to Anthropic last year when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That investment is now worth $17 billion and has the potential to double again at the IPO. Sequoia entered the picture earlier this year with a $3 billion investment when the valuation was $380 billion, securing about 1% ownership that has already more than doubled its initial cost.

Sound Ventures, launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, also holds a significant position. The firm invested $35 million in the 2023 Series C and has since added another $400 million to its stake. This combined investment now represents a worth in the billions. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm.

As the company moves toward its public debut, the focus will shift to how these private gains translate into public market performance. The expected $2 trillion valuation would further cement the financial success of these backers. For now, the $965 billion private price tag serves as a benchmark for the immense wealth generated by the AI boom.
