OpenAI is reportedly in advanced talks to secure a massive injection of private capital, choosing to bypass a public offering for now to bolster its finances ahead of an eventual debut on the stock market. According to sources who spoke with CNBC, the artificial intelligence laboratory is working to raise up to $30 billion in a funding round that would place the company's pre-money valuation at $1.25 trillion. The effort is being spearheaded by Coatue and investors located in the United Arab Emirates. OpenAI declined to comment on the matter.
This pursuit of private funds is not the first time such a large raise has been reported. Approximately one month ago, Bloomberg indicated that the company was assembling a $30 billion round with a $1.4 trillion valuation target. Because terms remain under negotiation in both reports, the final numbers could ultimately change. The involvement of investors in the United Arab Emirates is also linked to potential cooperation regarding computing capacity.
If the transaction closes at a valuation exceeding $1 trillion, OpenAI would claim the distinction of being the most valuable private company in history. This figure would also establish a high benchmark for the company's future stock market listing. The organization filed confidential paperwork for an initial public offering in June, a step taken after a funding round in March that valued the ChatGPT maker at $852 billion post-money.
The potential valuation carries significant implications for other players in the artificial intelligence sector. Reports indicate that Anthropic is seeking a valuation between $1.5 and $2 trillion for its own public debut. Anthropic raised $65 billion in May at a $965 billion valuation, a transaction many viewed as its final major funding round prior to going public. Like OpenAI, Anthropic submitted confidential paperwork in June.
Both companies are now at a similar juncture regarding public market filings. While OpenAI continues to secure private funding, rumors suggest Anthropic could file its public S-1 registration at any moment. The trajectory for both firms is moving toward an initial public offering, though specific dates have not been determined. OpenAI declined to comment on the specifics of the funding negotiations.
