Satellite Connectivity: Ukraine Reports Full Restoration of Starlink and Starshield Speeds

Ukrainian leaders confirm that satellite speeds have returned to normal levels following a week of restrictions that complicated military operations.

Ukrainian officials confirmed on Saturday that the satellite networks Starlink and Starshield have returned to their pre-restriction performance levels after a period of significant disruption lasting more than a week. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the recovery on the social media platform X, stating that the restoration process began overnight.

In his statement, Zelenskyy emphasized that the most critical development is the return to the operational speeds that existed before the limitations were imposed. He noted that the current speeds are now at the required level for effective military and logistical use. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry corroborated these claims, reporting that its monitoring systems verified stable connectivity at speeds exceeding 250 miles per hour. This marks a substantial increase from the restricted period, during which speeds were capped at approximately 100 miles per hour, a limit that the ministry said hindered drone interception efforts and other critical missions.

The satellite infrastructure has become a vital component of Ukraine’s defense strategy against the Russian invasion. The country depends on the network for coordinating drone operations, managing supply chains for food and water to troops, and maintaining communications along the front line. Zelenskyy also highlighted the service’s role in protecting Ukrainian infrastructure from Iranian-made Shahed drones deployed by Russian forces.

Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara attributed the successful resolution to direct dialogue led by the president. He described the outcome as significant for front-line service members, drone operators, and logistics personnel. Zelenskyy extended his thanks to American stakeholders, specifically mentioning members of Congress, the State Department, and President Donald Trump.

The source of the previous slowdown had created tension between Washington and Kyiv. Ukrainian officials previously told NBC’s Meet the Press that they believed the U.S. government had ordered the restrictions, suggesting that SpaceX acted on a directive from American authorities. On October 14, Elon Musk posted on X that Starshield is owned and controlled by the U.S. government, adding that speed and usage limits are determined by the U.S. military and ultimately the President. The Trump administration has denied interfering with Ukraine’s access, with President Trump stating on Friday that he would not reveal who ordered the restrictions. He also defended Musk, describing him as a fair person who rarely makes mistakes.

This technical resolution arrives as the United States leads a renewed effort toward peace negotiations. Russia has agreed to hold a trilateral meeting with Ukraine and the U.S. next month. Additionally, both sides have agreed to a localized ceasefire in the Russian-occupied southern city of Oleshky. The White House announced that First Lady Melania Trump brokered this agreement, which includes provisions for humanitarian aid and civilian evacuation in response to a worsening food crisis. Despite these diplomatic steps, active combat continues, with Ukraine striking a chemical plant in the Russian city of Tolyatti and a Russian drone igniting a fire in a residential building in Kyiv’s Obolon District on Saturday.
