TikTok Faces Accusations Over Minor Content
Former and current staff claim the social media giant allowed illegal payments for sexual videos involving children.

TikTok is facing new allegations that it generated revenue from videos depicting the sexual exploitation of minors. The claims, put forward by both former and current employees, suggest the company failed to adequately address internal warnings about illegal content circulating on its platform. According to the reports, the issue extends beyond simple moderation failures, pointing to a potential financial crime where the platform profited from content that should have been flagged and removed.
The internal concerns highlight a specific mechanism for these transactions. Employees noted that viewers were able to pay to access sexual content featuring minors, allowing the company to retain a portion of those funds. This payment structure was identified as a critical point of failure in the company's oversight processes. The documents indicate that the platform’s architecture allowed these exchanges to occur without triggering the necessary legal or internal alerts for extended periods.
Beyond the specific cases of sexual content, staff members raised alarms about broader age-verification vulnerabilities. Users under the age of 18 were reportedly exploiting loopholes to bypass restrictions on age-appropriate content. Additionally, these minor users utilized methods to prevent parents and guardians from reviewing their activity on the app. The internal records show that TikTok deliberately avoided conducting surveys to assess user ages, a decision driven by the concern that the resulting data would have to be disclosed to the Federal Trade Commission.
The allegations state that senior leadership was aware of these systemic issues but responded with inadequate measures. Social media companies are legally obligated to report suspected child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and to flag suspicions regarding money obtained illegally through their platforms. The gap between these legal requirements and the company's internal actions forms the core of the current accusations. Furthermore, internal discussions expressed worry that young users were being exposed to content related to suicide and self-harm, with the platform not taking sufficient steps to mitigate these risks.
The stakes are high given TikTok’s position in the market. It remains one of the most popular applications on the App Store, with a user base that includes a significant proportion of teenagers. This demographic makes the issue of youth safety a central pillar of the company's public image and operational strategy. The current controversy threatens to undermine that reputation by suggesting a disconnect between the company's stated values and its internal practices.
In response to the emerging narrative, TikTok issued a statement contesting the portrayal of events. The company described the claims as “clearly cherry-picked at the behest of trial lawyers,” arguing that they are being used to inaccurately rewrite history. TikTok maintained that these allegations mislead the public regarding its commitment to youth safety and the mechanics of how its platform functions. The response aims to frame the internal documents as part of a legal strategy rather than an admission of systemic negligence.
