Rubio Calls on Cuban Reformers to Form Direct Ties With CIA

The State Secretary issued a public invitation for islanders to collaborate with U.S. intelligence as Washington intensifies economic and military pressure on Havana.

The United States has escalated its diplomatic and economic offensive against Cuba by explicitly inviting domestic reformers to work directly with American intelligence agencies. This move marks a significant shift in strategy, moving beyond traditional back channels to a public solicitation for cooperation.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio initiated this new approach on Friday through a social media post on X. He addressed those seeking positive change in Cuba, stating that the current moment is ideal for action. Rubio highlighted the widespread frustration with failed promises, corruption, and the privileged lifestyle of a small elite as the driving forces for this shift.

In his message, Rubio urged Cubans to seize the opportunity to create the change they desire. He specifically called for a discrete partnership with the Central Intelligence Agency. The CIA quickly amplified this appeal by reposting the message, which included a version written in Spanish. The agency also shared a video that provided specific instructions for how islanders could contact the intelligence organization.

This public invitation arrives during a period of severe economic hardship on the island. The strict U.S. embargo and recent sanctions have placed immense pressure on the communist government. Basic goods have seen sharp price increases, and access to medical care has become increasingly difficult. Reports indicate that citizens are waiting hours in lines for bread and facing similar delays to secure doctor appointments.

The economic squeeze tightened further last week when Washington announced additional sanctions targeting Cuba's state-run bank. The U.S. government cited ties to Iran as the primary reason for this action. These measures are designed to increase the financial strain on Havana, thereby raising the cost of maintaining the status quo for the Cuban leadership.

President Donald Trump added a military dimension to the diplomatic push during a campaign rally in South Florida on Friday. He remarked that the U.S. would take care of Cuba on the way back from Iran, referencing Navy warships currently deployed near the Strait of Hormuz. Trump described a hypothetical scenario where one of these ships would stop fifty yards off the Cuban coast. He suggested that the crew would raise their hands in a gesture, after which Rubio would be sent in to finalize a deal.

Havana has responded to these developments with firm rejection of the U.S. rhetoric. Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla posted on X on Friday to convey the government's stance. He stated that Cuba rejects any threats stemming from American ambitions toward the island. Rodríguez Parrilla emphasized that while the coastline features beautiful beaches, it is also rugged and inhospitable to those arriving with hostile intentions and a desire for domination.
